Successful people stay with a job from beginning to end.
Some people are slow starters. It takes time for them to start a
job or project. But once they finally get started, there's no stopping
them.
Then there are people who are great at getting started_ but never
seem to finish anything. They have great ideas, enthusiasm, and lots of
energy. When given a new challenge, they can't wait to get going, but
somewhere along the way they lose their momentum or get sidetracked.
They are easily distracted and instead of following through on a job
until it is completed, they spend their time working on a number of
projects and end up with little to show for their efforts.
Then there are people who are easily discouraged. They are ready
to quit the moment they encounter the first obstacle. But no one ever
achieves measurable success in life without enough determination to
follow through, especially in the face of obstacles. The people who
succeed, whether in life or on the job, are willing to face and deal
with any obstacle they may encounter.
Where would we be today if Thomas Edison had given up on the light
bulb; or if Alexander Graham Bell hadn't followed through with his
discovery of the telephone? What if Bill Gates had given up the first
time he became discouraged?
So you ask_ How do you avoid leaving a trail of unfinished projects behind you?
Start developing a habit of seeing things through to completion. Tackle one task at a time and stay at it until that task is done. Stay focused and don't let interruptions distract you. Don't wait for others to finish what you started.
Once you develop the habit of following through with tasks, and
eventually the project, it will become easier each time. Get up to
speed, maintain your focus and stay that way until the project is
completed. Don't allow yourself to stop short of your goal. After all,
why start a job or project if you only do it halfway?
